ONS reports 3.4% uptake in civil partnerships in 2016

The latest ONS report on civil partnerships has revealed in increase of 3.4% in 2016 as compared to 2015, a total of 890 across England and Wales. The findings show the first annual increase in civil partnerships since the introduction of same sex marriage in 2013. Same-sex marriage conversions for civil partnerships face delays

Under new same-sex marriage laws which came into effect on the 13th of March, couples are now allowed to make applications to marry in the UK. The first same-sex marriages following the change in law are due to take place on the 29th of March, but for couples currently in civil partnerships who are hoping to organise a conversion to marriage, the wait may be longer. The Government has not provided a clear timescale for when civil partnerships can be converted to marriage, although recent estimated suggest there could be delays in implementing these changes until the end of the year.
